Climate and Weather
Windhoek is the capital city of Namibia and is situated in a valley between the Khomas Highland, Auas, and Eros mountains. It has a subtropical semi-arid climate with hot, sunny days, and cool to cold nights. Windhoek has a mild climate, with average summer temperatures reaching into the late 30’s Celsius (upper 90’s Fahrenheit), and winter temperatures getting down to single digits Celsius (above freezing). The city experiences a good amount of sunshine year-round, but the intensity and duration of summer sunshine is much greater than winter sunshine. On certain days, dust devils and haboobs (severe dust storms) can be seen. The area receives an average of 250–350 mm (10–14 in) of rainfall a year, and the less populated northwestern parts of Namibia receive about half of that amount of precipitation.
