The official time zone is UTC+2:00, and the indigenous languages spoken by the people of Pemba are Swahili, Kimwani and Makonde. The currency used is the Mozambican metical (MZN).

Climate and Weather

The climate in Pemba, the second largest island of Tanzania, is tropical and hot. The island is located close to the equator and the dry season usually occurs between July and October. The temperatures throughout the year usually remain fairly consistent, although the warmest temperature is reached in the months of June and July with the highest average temperature being around 29°C (84°F). Rainfall also remains consistent throughout the year. Rainfall is heaviest during April, May, and October when the typical precipitation rate surpasses 500mm. The rest of the year sees intermittent rain with the lightest months being between July and September. The heavy rainfall does not only result in lush vegetation but also in a high humidity, making Pemba a very hot and uncomfortable environment for visitors. There are two airports in Pemba: Pemba International Airport (POL) and Pemba Airport (PMA). The main airport is Pemba International Airport (POL), located about 10 km from downtown Pemba.
